Aztekerne delte gudeverden med andre mesoamerikanske civilisationer. Fælles var at i begyndelsen havde der kun været én gud, Ometeotl, men denne gud var både hankøn og hunkøn, som blev kaldt Tonacatecli og Tonacaçiguatl, altså en dualitet.
